Witney Workhouse was built in 1835-6 to a design by George Wilkinson, although the chapel wasn’t added until 1861. Having been used to house POWs during WW1, the workhouse was sold in 1922 and eventually taken over by an engineering company in 1940. The chapel then suffered the humiliation of being used as the works canteen. The workhouse itself was replaced in 1979 by modern buildings, which were in turn demolished in 2004, with the site being developed for housing. (The development was still ongoing when I visited in July 2006). The chapel remains and although in a very sorry state, it would appear that as it still extant someone wants, or at least hopes, it to have a future - whatever that may be,
These brief details were taken from the Witney section of Peter Higginbotham’s excellent workhouse site - http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Witney/Witney.shtml
