St John was built in the Early English style in 1832, extended in 1857 and again in 1875. Despite these extensions, by 1904 it was too small, so St Michael & All Angels (above) was built in 1908-9. To my untutored eye, St Michael doesn’t appear any larger than St John would have been, but what do I know?. (The west end does give the appearance of having been shortened, but as far as I can tell, this was how it was built, only the first stage of the design having been completed)

St John was closed in 1909, although it wasn’t demolished until 1924. The site is now occupied by a block of flats. The picture to the left looks towards where the south-west corner would have been.
