Wall paintings arenít normally of great interest to me, but some of those at South Newington deserve a showing here. The one on the left shows the martyrdom of Thomas a Becket. In 1538 Henry VIII ordered that all paintings of Becket should be defaced, but this example escaped as it been painted over in the Middle Ages. According to the church guide, only one other painting with an intact Becket head is known to exist.
