Lyneham |

Thanks are due to the Wychwoods Local History Society for allowing me to use their picture of St Michael & All Angels and to Joan Howard-Drake for her assistance in locating the site where it stood, as well as passing on information on the chapels |
|
Lyneham was a chapelry in the parish of Shipton-under-Wychwood until 1895 when it was annexed to SS Simon & Jude church in Milton under Wychwood. In 1907, Rev. D.H.W. Horlock conceived the idea of erecting an Iron Church and it was opened and dedicated to St Michael and All Angels on September 24th of that year. It was last used for a service on October 4th, 1972 and was demolished in 1975. |

The site of St Michael & All Angels is now occupied by this bungalow. |

The first chapel (above left) was built in 1896 and replaced by the later building (above right) in 1925. As an indication of how prices have changed over the years, when the new chapel was built, the old one was sold for £30 & it’s harmonium fetched £1. |

When I first put this page together, the date of the last service didn’t seem to be in doubt. However, my local contact Joan has told me that a letter to the Wychwood LHS said that a double baptism had taken place there on December 8th, 1974. |
