Oxfordshire Churches

Our Lady of Walsingham is a bit of a mystery to me. Despite a lot of searching, I’ve managed to turn up only two references to it. The first was a listing on the OHCT website (see my home page for a link) from a couple of years ago where it was included in the list of churches participating in the annual Ride & Stride. The second was an OS map dating from the 1960‘s from which I found it’s location.

Apart from that, I know nothing about it, except for the fact that it no longer exists. The site is now occupied by a small housing estate and the only hint that it was ever here is the name of the road - Walsingham Close. As far as I can tell, the church would have stood approximately where the car is, with the south side facing the camera .

Intriguingly, the Victoria County History refers to a building of a Roman Catholic church in Bloxham in 1938, but gives it’s dedication as St Peter. Did the VCH get it wrong, or was St Peter replaced at some time by Our Lady? I’ve no idea, but if anyone can tell me more, I’d love to know.
